The Healthiest Meal Of The Day

I am sometimes torn between passing on some really important nutritional information and not wanting to appear to be “commercially” driven.  However, yesterday, I had a conversation with a personal trainer who confirmed the remarkable results you can expect with Beachbody‘s meal replacement, Shakeology.  By remarkable results, I mean in terms of weight-loss, increased energy levels, enhanced moods and immune system boosting.  We were discussing his new website and he just happened to mention that he had lost 8 pounds by using Shakeology.  I was intrigued by his comment because he’s a very active college student who, as I mentioned, is a personal trainer and extremely nutrition conscious.  His results were similar to mine in that, after starting Shakeology, I lost 10 pounds I didn’t even know I had to lose.  The point here is that we all have a natural set-point for our ideal weight and, if you are getting the correct nutrition, your body will naturally find that set-point.  Unfortunately, our western diet packs the body with empty calories, addictive substances, and myriad toxins that destroy this natural process.  The result is excess weight, stress, irritability, a lack of energy and being sick more often.

If you are skeptical, I challenge you to try it for yourself.  Below are two short videos that will describe Shakeology in more detail.  I urge you to take the time to watch them, then give it a try….risk free.  By replacing one meal a day with Shakeology, you will start to see and feel the results in as few as 10 days.  If, within 30 days, you are not enjoying the benefits mentioned above, you can send the empty bag back and get a 100%, no-questions-asked refund.  You’ve got nothing to lose, except maybe some weight, and a great deal to potentially gain in terms of overall health and happiness.

“Happiness Is The Way”

Just Do ItI am repeatedly impressed with the brilliance of Nike’s slogan “Just Do It”.  It’s simple, direct and really cuts through all the excuses, roadblocks, procrastinations and fears we tend to give power to and allow to block us from a more fulfilling life.  Whether it’s exercise, diet or career oriented, the mantra of “Just Do It” playing over and over in your mind can have a profound effect.  How about using this strategy with what is probably the most important quality of all…..happiness?  Skeptical?  If so, it’s because you are either erecting those imaginary barriers mentioned above or you believe happiness somehow resides outside of yourself and therefore is not within your control.  Once you fully grasp the reality that happiness is a conscious decision and fully within your control, you can work through the artificial barriers by practicing proven strategies like the ones below.

meditationOne of the quotes spiritualist Dr. Wayne Dyer uses often is illustrative of the principle you need to internalize regarding happiness, “There is no way to happiness, happiness is the way”.  Thinking something outside yourself like material possessions, fame, status or reputation will make you happy is a recipe for disaster or, at least, a very rocky road in life.  It puts your level of happiness at the mercy of things over which you have no control.  On the other hand, accepting responsibility for your happiness and taking effective steps to insure it will produce amazing results.

Start today by consciously incorporating these habits into your life:

Appreciate life ~ Develop an attitude of gratitude and count your blessings! When you start looking for things to be thankful for, you’ll discover more reasons to be grateful.

Keep learning ~ Invest time and energy into continually learning and developing new skills. Keep your brain stimulated with exciting information and hobbies.

Do what you love ~ This may seem obvious, but a majority of people dislike their job! Choose a career that you enjoy and make time in your schedule for your hobbies and to pursue special interests.

Laugh a lot ~ Don’t take life too seriously! Laugh at yourself, make light of your circumstances and infuse fun into daily activities.

Forgive ~ Holding onto anger, resentment or jealousy will only hurt you. Learn to forgive others and yourself for mistakes. Let it go and move on.

Meditate ~ More and more research is showing that meditation has major benefits on health and well-being. It increases positive emotions, life satisfaction and immune function.

Love ~ Nurture your relationships with friends and family and make it a priority to spend time with and to support your loved ones.

Stop comparing ~ Happy people don’t waste their time worrying about what other people think, or with gossiping. Let go of the need to judge or criticize. Instead, concentrate on creating and living YOUR best life.

Be positive ~ Make an effort to see the glass half full and always look for the silver lining in any situation. If you notice a negative thought creeping into your mind, counteract it with a powerful, positive affirmation.

Surround yourself with the right people ~ Surround yourself with happy, positive people who truly want the best for you, who take you higher and support you on your journey to success.

You’ll notice that every one of the recommendations above requires a conscious decision on your part, followed by a specific action.  Happiness is within your control so “Just Do It“!

Don’t Wait For The Wake-up Call

alarm-clockThe answer to so many health issues faced by the majority of adults in this country is becoming unavoidably clear, but it continues to be a mystery to me why there is such resistance to making the necessary lifestyle changes.  I get the fact that the food and pharmaceutical industries, along with our healthcare system and the regulatory agencies, have produced a pill-popping, chronically ill society addicted to salt, sugar and fat, but with the growing evidence from sophisticated, scientifically-based clinical trials, in connection with a plethora of anecdotal stories like the one below, screaming for a plant-based, whole food, organic nutrition regimen, why such widespread, dogged resistance?  I suspect it’s a combination of apathy, lack of education, stubbornness in letting go of what used to be pillars of good nutrition and the successful commercial efforts to get people “hooked” on junk.  Are you ready to take responsibility and control of your health, or is it going to take a wake-up call like this:

Heart Attack at 67 Led to Diet Changes … Now Off Multiple Meds and Feeling Better Each Day!

Patrick 570x299 Heart Attack at 67 Led to Diet Changes … Now Off Multiple Meds and Feeling Better Each Day!In 2008, at 67, I had a heart attack and two stents were inserted.

Although I appeared in good health, fit, and not overweight, in hindsight I’m not surprised by the heart attack. My uncle and a nephew died from heart disease in their 40s; my younger brother died suddenly in his late 50s; and my youngest brother recently had a heart attack with six bypasses, which resulted in congestive heart failure, poor kidney function, and insulin-dependent type 2 diabetes.

I thought I was doing quite well following the DASH diet, recommended by most “experts.” It allowed me to get my symptoms under control, with the use of three blood-pressure medications (Coreg, novo hydrazide and Micardis), as well as Plavix, Warfarin, Crestor, nitroglycerin patches, nitroglycerin spray, and antidepressants.

Then I watched Forks Over Knives with my wife, in September of 2011. I gradually started moving toward a vegetarian diet after watching the film.

Now, after a year of eating entirely the plant-strong way, my blood tests show very low cholesterol, and my blood pressure is optimal. My doctor took me off eight of my nine medications! He said my bad cholesterol is the lowest he’s ever seen, even after being off Crestor for three months. All I’m taking now is one pill for blood pressure (Micardis), which I’m hoping might eventually be stopped.

Here in Canada, my procedures, including all ambulance use, cost nothing: no co-pay, no limits — except for drugs. I used to pay 25% of the drug cost, which amounted to about $3,000 a year. So, on top of the health benefits I’ve experienced, our household cash flow has improved. In addition, our food costs are greatly reduced: plant-based eating is far less costly than the SAD diet.

I’m never turning back!

Another Strike Against Meat & Junk Food

No meatThe first step to better health is education.  Hands down, it is the most important initial undertaking if you’re tired of being sick all the time, looking older than you are, want to avoid chronic diseases or are just tired of being tired all the time.  Once you start eating right, you will be nothing short of astonished at the effect it has on your quality of life and, in the long run, the length of it.  The amount of scientific data now available supporting the concept of food as both fuel and medicine is mounting daily, with reputable, non-profit institutions and universities undertaking credible investigations that are rocking the food industry (and our government food agencies) to the core.

No meatOne of my favorite sources of information is Dr. Michael Greger‘s website,, which is dedicated to spreading the word about these cutting-edge, credible and scientifically-based clinical investigations.  Here’s an example of a short video about the consumption of a class of chemicals that I had no idea was a health issue and my guess is you’ll have the same reaction.  This takes me back to my initial point; there are special interest groups out there peddling products for profit that have covered up, distracted, minimized or outright lied about the health hazards associated with their products.  Your best weapon against this abuse is the education available from unbiased, independently funded research.  It’s your health and your responsibility to manage it!

Mimic Marijuana, Safely

Pot smokeWhat is it that makes marijuana have such a dramatic physiological and psychological effect on humans?  It’s a biological mechanism at work in all of us, called the Endocannabinoid sysytem (ECS), that includes specific receptors in our cells, named in honor of the profound effect on this system of Cannabis sativa L, or marijuana.  The external stimulation of these cannabinoid receptors within us, mainly the CB1 and CB2 receptors, regulate important functions of all mammals, such as sleep, digestion, mental processes and mood. The receptors for cannabinoids are one of the most abundant receptors in the human brain and are expressed in nearly every tissue and cell.  CB1 receptors are found mostly in the brain and nervous system, while CB2 are related primarily to our immune systems.

Happily, scientists have recently discovered different plants with compounds that can modulate the ECS like marijuana.  If you want to stimulate the CB2 receptors and mimic the immune boosting effects of cannabis, go with echinacea, citrus and broccoli, but these will not give the same psychotropic effect.  To stimulate the CB1 receptors found in the brain and neurons, the answer is…….carrots!

So why not just stick with marijuana and avoid having to find other sources that mimic its effects?  You’ll find the medical answer to that question in the short video below, not to mention the obvious legal ramifications.
